I remember that people used to have actual jobs performing that task.

But the news organizations thought that the computer could solve all those problems. Remember telling my editor that spell check would only catch wrong spelling, not wrong words or proper grammar. He to this day believes that spell check would have saved a lot of wrong words being used.
