I make donations to whom and when I choose, not a fan of the cashier asking, rather give it to a homeless person... they may spend it on alcohol but who needs a drink more than that guy?

The cashier is usually required to ask. The "company" she works for is backing a particular charity & uses the store to promote/fund it. I usually donate my 'change' from the transaction, if the charity is one I support.
