Its all an illusion
If I remember my biology, this tree is a dicot. This means that the moisture and nutrients are fed up to the tree through the exterior epideral part. The leaves receive the sunlight where that photosynthesis stuff happens and is transferred down the tree through the same epideral layer. The center apparently is not necessary for survival. I got one in my backyard, full of bats.....cool. And I could be wrong and totally batshit crazy, I am sure we have an agnostic with a Phd that will correct me.
