This is one of the reasons I left the UMC. The Bishop that led the fight that homosexuality was inconsistent with christian teachings, died with AIDS. The hypocrisy was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

I am afraid it has always been the case that if you want a strong following quickly, it is much easier to rally people to hate as one, than to care as one.
Kill the "problem" was always easier than solve the "problem"
Hide the different and pretend it does not exist, less frightening than accept and understand the unfamiliar.
