Read up on the Geneva convention so you understand. Helps if you are familiar with the Nuremburg Trials too, to give you some background on why the Geneva Conventions became a thing.
The US has laws eg Leahy Law, that forbids arming and supporting any military merely accused of war crimes/ crimes against humanity. Australia has similar laws or has signed off on international law. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, especially for politicians.
