We're largely a secular society in OZ but it has been an interesting journey reading the posts from the USA. I only spent a week there in Washington and that was secular but learning about the attitudes of those in other parts - the Christian belt is another thing. It astounds me. Still I guess people need something to believe in because it's easy. Being an atheist is very confronting especially regarding your own mortality.
In OZ we're probably mostly atheists though Allah is starting to make a presence.
I like the churches here but I view them from an architectural point of view, plus tourists love them and we need tourism to support our mismanaged government and economy.
Have fun my OZ friends and it's best we don't try to convert anyone.

For the last 25 years American evangelist money has been used to buy Australian Community Radio licences in order to encircle the country and bombard it with their god bothering proselytising claptrap. And you have never noticed?
Here is the 2016 statistic:
According to the 2016 census, the only states and territories in which the majority of the population was Christian were Queensland (56.03%) and New South Wales (55.18%), while those with the lowest proportion of Christians were the Northern Territory (47.69%) and the Australian Capital Territory (45.38%).
I see that there is even a registered political party called the Australian Christian Party.

Dear FrayedBear, How many are practising Christians? The census didn't delve into that. I still remember my father laboriously filling out the census. Don't think he knew what an atheist was so he just put down Christian. A god was never mentioned in our household even though we were supposedly Christians!
Now FrayedBear, I actually luv Christians especially Catholics. They're so naughty.

@jules4169 thanks to the catholic lack of restraint of pregnancy they are the largest group of xtian in Australia so you know have plenty to peeve at. ?

Yeah... I hadn't considered that door-knockers weren't coming by because they've become atheist or agnostic to some degree. I'm atheist but have been to churches all across the country as my parents are.

My parents are religious is what I meant.

Perhaps you have not lived in god riddled Victoria.

Even my local Jehovah's Witnesses are fairly chill. Yes they turn up regularly but don't really go for the hard sell, one time they noticed a "fox trap" and offered to give us a hand disposing of any ferals I caught. Have never yet told me I'm going to hell even though I'm upfront about being an atheist.

Dear Kimba, I'd luv to be told I'm going to hell. Hell definitely seems like more fun than heaven.

when it comes to the religious mania i am glad to have chosen australia when i left germany for a new home. as a born heathen i wouldn't want it any other way - no desire to convert or have the attempt of conversion inflicted on me.

I thought Germany was quite liberal now.

@jules4169 yes. ...& cold. ..& full of people 😀
