Just spent 48 hours on the North Country Trail in Western Michigan. Hiked 24 miles, encountered four species of woodpecker, as well as loons, hummingbirds, scarlet tanager, and hermit thrush. I even met a frog who was swimming in his personal pond ...

Wow Lotta interesting and ambitious stuff here. I'm a dog-walker (so rarely more than 2-3 miles at a time) and a city-street cyclist (15-20 miles). And yet, it's moving that counts, right?

For east coasters, or those willing to travel, Would there be interest in a Sunday-after-thanksgiving, burn off the extra calories hike? Location TBD, but the closer to me (roughly Roanoke VA) the better. ?

So I don't so much go on hikes as I do drive out to the desert and wander about looking for rocks. It gets interesting walking a few miles into a canyon with a pick, shovel, and various hammers and chisels only to have to bring all that stuff back ...
