Insured, But Indebted: Couple Works 5 Jobs To Pay Off Medical Bills
No one or couple bringing in 100,000 should have to fear losing everything! I came down with the flu last year. Mid Friday called the doctor, couldn't get me in. Suggested I go to the emergency room. Over 1400 dollars later I was a cussing bitch when I got the bill. You have to be very weary when going into a hospital! Surgery? Do you know if you're in for a surgery, and your doctor/surgeon for what ever reason calls another doctor/specialist into the room, you can occur a substantially larger amount of charges in the thousands for a mere few moments of his or her entry to the room?
I left my last general doctor for another reason. Upon a wellness program check up that's suppose to be paid by your insurance company, he initiated a conversation on other issues. That's fine, we've always done it. But that particular year when the bill came to the house I had a 100 dollar charge my insurance wouldn't cover. For the life of me I can't remember what it was labeled under on the bill. We had to look it up. So the following year I made a point not to bring up any chit chat on anything other than what the day was to be about. I still got that same charge on that years visit.
I really liked this doctor to. I always had fun talking to him. But over the few years I was with him it was obvious he worked for the group he was part of and the corporate medical companies first over the patient. Another example was when my triglycerides went off the charts out of no where. He put me on this soft jelled pill that cost over 300 for a 3 month supply. Looking at over 2400 a year! My ignorant ass brought it up on facebook with a friend replying to use the fish jell from off the shelf. huh!?! Now I had issues with the fact that searching my meds I found that the new meds I'd been getting could make my triglycerides go up. Which he quickly blew off. But not offering me another source of a vastly cheaper method was inexcusable! I suggest you never get to a point of high blood pressure if at all possible. It's been a very expensive teaching.
