"I live in San Antonio, TX. Those of us who are both close to the border and volunteering with asylum seekers are more informed about the situation than many. I can tell you this: believe your own eyes and ears.
The photos and videos of facilities so crowded these people literally cannot lie down - even on the concrete floor - are real. The treatment that adults and children are receiving from CBP is horrific. CBP is indeed completely overwhelmed (just as Pence says) but the reason they're overwhelmed is the kicker. Instead of the former, normal, legal procedure of admitting/processing asylum seekers and giving them a court date to come back and plead their case (99% do, I can provide the stats), the Trump administration policy is to throw them into detention and hold them there. Not all of them mind you -- not the many thousands of people from Europe or Asia who arrive here by plane, or those who come over the Canadian border. Only the brown ones coming over the Southern border.
This is what has created the chaos --- and that is precisely what this administration wants. To target this group of people, to make them all out to be dirty, scary, criminal, and less-than-human. Which makes it much easier to treat them like animals. Trump is using immigrants just like Hitler used the Jews - whipping up fear of them and creating an "enemy" that his supporters are thrilled to hate.
Also Seeking Asylum Is Legal Fleeing violence and death is normal. Saving your children’s lives is heroic. Look into your own family history. Chances are many of your ancestors arrived here the same way, for the same reasons."
