Thank you for your concern.
Science is the pursuit of knowledge of our world, what we can sense, observe, measure.

Seven Labour M.
Mcflewster comments on Feb 18, 2019:
It is obvious to me that there has been a campaign of disinformation about Corbyn and these 7 have just swallowed the lies hook line and sinker- along with many of their constituents. It would be a great pity if their actions prevent Jeremy from having a chance of real change in politics. History is against them but I am not a history fan because it never repeats faithfully.

I prefer to say that all scientists must be agnostic. If you want to defend science you MUST be agnostic. Why would anyone starting to prove and advance scientific knowledge by ensuring a level playing field be anything else but agnostic. We must assume, that is, lack of predisposition and/ or bias?

I do not think that Mr Greer knew all the politics or strategy planning behind Churchill's thoughts and neither do we so it is difficult to judge. I do know that Morgan showed off his worst bullying and "I know more than you so Im right" attitude. He is the prince of over-talking and should be removed from his post . He is never happier than when 4 people are talking at once, then congratulates himself for winning but we have understood nothing because we heard just jabbering.

Philosphy has a collection of connections to and between human traits, good and bad. Science has the ability to ratify those linkages.

Political Correctness for the next group in power:
Mcflewster comments on Jan 13, 2019:
Political correctness is all about getting people to vote for you or listen to your ideas. also it helps generally if there are kinder ways of saying the same thing. However you should judge the need for PC from the point of view of a disadvantaged person and not just say. "I'm all right ,Jack this is unnecessary."
Can I please join?

Welcome to the group. Do you need any permissions? I think you are just showing respect for the UK way of thinking and I feel quite happy with that. Not that it is superior to any way of thinking -just different. We are all going through a hell of a political time at present and we need all the help and ideas that we can get.BTW a lot of people here are with you on the royalist agenda.

Do you consider yourself a Scientist??
Mcflewster comments on Dec 15, 2018:
I consider that everyone is born with the innate abilities to be a scientist AND that we could improve all science and the uptake of science by actually calling everyone a scientists. Each person,I admit has had varying degrees of practice and confidence. Additionally everyone has had their science abilities suppressed from birth whilst we each reinvent and free our ourselves so that we practice real science. Science is not a body of knowledge, nor a group of people in white coats but a series of processes linked in a cyclical fashion. Once you have chosen one of these processes (e.g.ask a question) then the rest of the processes naturally follow on if the mind is free to practice what it was born with. Why do we always talk about the hard and intricate **knowledge **derived from science instead of giving each person the chance to follow the logic and methods of science to prove things for themselves.?
Saying goodbye to a coworker, and fellow atheist today.
Mcflewster comments on Dec 12, 2018:
If you feel that Religion has prevented you from being sad, compassionate, respectful of the dead and unable to point out the good that this man has done, then things are really bad. I am sure that this is not the case and that you have it in you to find a way to point out the real worth of people, particularly in the science and learning field. That is certainly what Humanism is about and all of us have some of that within us - it just needs recognizing.

Vote result is immaterial as it is the hard line Brexiteers which must be ousted. Mrs May has said that she will not lead the next government , but has a tight grip on this postman's delivery leg and will not let go until she is pushed perhaps by a parliamentary vote on lack of confidence.

Czechoslovakia is an entirely different situation but do not ask me to explain. UK can provide some excellent leaders but noit the biased Brexiteers .

Just an update on Brexit options [thedailymash.co.uk]
Mcflewster comments on Nov 20, 2018:
A good but Jokey assessment. My view is that we should praise leavers for starting the process (OR getting it out of our hair )and then treat the 2016 referendum as PART of the full and proper process IMO as decribed below i.e. use the chance to be educated whilst we are in the crisis or we will have countless other chaos referenda whilst we are putting Mr Cameron on trial for leading us on his path. No democratic referendum should be without at least these important phases .

1 A vote to fire a ‘starting gun’ 2 An intensive fact finding phase in which any opposing sides should give full free and deep information with integrity, nothing hidden and no cunning distractions. 3 Lots of negotiation 4. A vote to decide the acceptability of what has been decided.
5. Revisions of offers and acceptances .
6. Final conclusion. Re Brexit, so far we have had only No 1 (in 2016) . Well done if you asked for it and voted
Not 2,3,4. Perhaps we will get no 5 soon and 6 will follow when ready. As a comparative test there are literally millions of people across the world who will have used all of these these process when they have been on strike. Not all strikes fulfil this ideal above however but when they do follow the above millions of people have been satisfied by these processes .

Why should Brexit be any different?

This you are reading was posted on 16th Nov. The original post was intending to compare the changes to our members that result from membership of agnostic.com with other social media, like Facebook etc. It IS difficult to define "better person". I really did not intend to imply that just being in the site actually improves one. IMO this site does improve us even if you don't notice but some people did report satisfying changes. I wonder if anyone has de-registered from the site in order to improve themselves? We shall never know.

Mcflewster comments on Nov 2, 2018:
Being an atheist is a journey which some people do very quickly and others take longer. Indoctrination is a difficult thing to shake off. Undoubtedly he should be persuaded to discuss with you some of the threads that have affected or reinforced your thinking and are found on this very site. Better still get him to ask questions on this site. Inquiry is the best mindset.

Can science and religion be reconciled?
Mcflewster comments on Oct 28, 2018:
I completely reject this analysis. To my mind, they were never apart. To explain … First scientists and first religionists used the same processes of observation, planning, prediction, conclusions BUT the differences are that religionists had the wrong theories and imposed conclusions. They should have accepted that there may not be a conclusion [ agnosticism]. Because they made prediction that the ordinary man or woman cannot make they observed the power of seeming to know what everything was about and took on a privileged position alongside royalty and leadership. This power and privilege they are reluctant to loosen. Scientist who are also religionists have developed the habit early on of partitioning the brain to keep close to friends and relatives who have not developed this capacity–something the brain IS wired to do-e.g. split personalities etc

How do you handle negativity regarding your agnostic ideas?
Mcflewster comments on Oct 21, 2018:
I try to 'blind' them with science - better expressed as 'enlighten' them but when I sense they have left my train of thoughts I back peddle as it can be counterproductive. However for me knowing what their science limits are helps me to be a better science explainer. Science of course does annoy some atheists and we have a long way to go to 'sing off one hymn sheet' but I believe that is the way forward.

I have never done the following so I cannot verify its effectiveness, but I would ask the family to sit with their eyes closed (for focus only) and concentrate on the ill person. People take it in Random turns to recall an incident involving the ill person , or an anecdote, or a favorite 'anything' about the subject and try to spark a discussion about what value that person has been in life or what would make that person want to live longer by valuing what they value. In this way you cut out god but do what prayer is trying to achieve,so no miracles , nothing may happen as a result of what you do. but something **practical and real **may happen - like spark the desire to open a photo album or just relate another forgotten[ by most] story. Mcflewster comments on Jul 19, 2018:
'Doubting' is just the beginning of the process which must be continued by asking countless questions and getting satisfactory answers. The phase 'Agnostic, comes about PERHAPS when you can see something good in both sides and you cannot prove the most important things on both sides. It is quite different from 'fence sitting' and a lot of philosophical questions reach the Agnostic phase awaiting proofs .

Mcflewster comments on Jul 16, 2018:
@David_Cooper What I think "Brexit means Brexit" means is " I want to leave the EU for a couple of reasons but I do not want anyone to raise any points that I had not thought of and encourage other people to do the same". We have not heard Brexiteers explaining the most important reasons that they want to leave OR the reasons they are holding from us (- mostly to improve their own finances). I simply wanted to point out that there is a bad side to competition [which a few people picked up on]. Competition involves a lot of comparison between individual abilities and teams etc. However it rarely bothers to find out if one is comparing like with like so that wrong judgments can lead to disappointments. If you do not have the genes, strength, intelligence, persistence and connections of Usain Bolt you will never beat him unless you improve all your own attributes and more. Of course you can quickly find out where you are in these respects by run a quick dash with him, but I think it would be better to concentrate on your own attributes using science of course. Team competition involves you surrendering some of your own abilities to let stronger people come forward in a spirit of co-operation and is far more complicated. “ in good fun rather than serious competition. There isn't any money involved either ” is a good phrase to avoid all the disappointments of competition and bad judgments.
