@Joanne OK but watch out that the orbit of Bertrand Russel's teapot doesn't decay and it may fall on your head :-). Apart from possibly the Hindu gods the only one that really matters is YAWEH the Jewish god. I have read the first books of the old testament in some detail and it is obvious to me that the polytheist Jews adopted monotheism gradually after exile in Babylonia and used this god to justify their warlike and aquisitive behaviour. Christianity is just a Jewish cult that got lucky and Islam is just a mishmash of Judaim and Christianity with lots of draconian rules added. If you can find in there somewhere your god well that's up to you.

@Joanne What is a god ? A supernatural being that controls certain aspects of the natural world. We know nothing before the big bang so if it was instigated by a superior force as some people believe, and this force does not interfere in the workings of the universe as we now know that the universe operates by certain physical laws, it is not a god. We do not know exactly how life started on earth but we know how it evolved from single celled organism without any interference from any supernatural force so we know that there is no god involved. So we know gods do not exist; Anyway I dislike being called an Atheist as it is a label applied by believers who are in my mind illogical and irrational

Obviously he has long been an outspoken opponent of religion but I think from the short summary of the interview is that his major concern is the rise of nationalism throughout the world with it's inherent dangers and it has superceded religion as a danger to civilsation.

Moravian replies on Sep 18, 2019:
@Flowerwall In a nutshell, The UK has been a member of the EU for almost as long as I can remember to the benefit of the UK and the rest of Europe. We are so intertwined in everything from free trade, free movement of citizens, laws on everything from health and safety to employee protection that it will be an absolute nightmare to extricate ourselves. We have a common agriculture policy and a common fisheries agreement and many other common agreements. PM Cameron made a disasterous error of judgement as he now admits to call the referendum, which was done to quieten a few right wing Eurosceptics in his party. He never expected the leave result and he cut and ran immediately after the result' Obviously it does cost money but apart from the running of what is probably an overbeaurocratic organisation the rest goes to improving the lot in poorer European countries. Eg Ireland was a very poor country and is now one of the wealthiest countries in Europe. Since the result the value of the pound has been in freefall and the economy is suffering through uncertainty of the future' As a trading block the EU is one of the largest in the world and the Uk will now have to organise individual trade agreements wih all the current trading countries. A rather tongue in cheek analogy is -- I am going to leave netflix and arrange individual agreements with all the film distriburtors. Fucking madness

[crooksandliars.com] This got me thinking, how many people on here support strict gun control?
Rustee comments on Sep 3, 2019:
I am a gun owner, and will not give up my guns. Of course, I am emotionally stable, have no desire to shoot anything alive, and store my guns and ammo separately and locked. I love to shoot, but only clay pigeons, paper targets, or (with my cameras) pictures!
Moravian replies on Sep 17, 2019:
@Rustee I am sure you are and I would not suggest otherwise. The point I was making is that uniquely in the western world the USA has a gun culture that is accepted by ordinary folk and this results in thousands of deaths each year by accident, suicide and homicide. An example ;- I visted friends of a friend in Idaho last year and the householder told me that when his children were growing up he had loaded guns in the house because some time previusly a psycopath had come to the town and kidnapped and killed two women so he was taking no chances. The gun culture causes paranoia. My late brother in law who lived in London had sporting rifles in an approved locked gun cabinet. He was on holiday once and housebreakers forced open his gun cabinet and stole some money and valuables he kept there but left the guns. Burglers know that people keep valuables in a gun cabinet so no guns are really secure.
