It's interesting I have been posting these exact points over the last year regarding both Trump and Reagan. The idea that Reagan was a great president is ridiculous. I lived through him and disdained his lack of intellect at the time. Trump is even less impressive in the intellect category.

@t1nick Reagan actually did have some conservative concepts, in the old fashioned meaning of the word. He was a fairly decent individual and believed in treating people well. He even believed in Social Security. He would never have indulged in such arrogant and selfish behavior as Trump, and he certainly never belittled others the way this one does. Did he engage in the rough & tumble of politics? Of course, but he didn't disrespect his opponents as human beings.

He pretty clearly sees himself as the center of the world and lies in any way he can to inflate his own ego and self-portrait. The worst thing, to me, is that his followers accept his fictions uncritically and see all the fact-checking as attacks, not as reality. This is possibly because they've tied their political and personal identities to his, and so they can't bear to think they've been so foolish as to bind "their names, their fortunes, their sacred honor" to a con man and a liar. It's also very likely because Trump is so good at attracting those whose tribal instinct outweighs everything else, and when the head man of the tribe is "attacked", their only response is to circle the wagons. I haven't completely given up the idea of reaching Republicans through appealing to their rationality, but it does seem more hopeless by the day.

That's a load of, with all due respect, moose pucky. Plenty of people at the time had a problem with the ad, for one thing. Just like Reagan's 1984 "Wolves" ad, and Bush's similar 2004 ad. Using scary imagery in wartime (it was the Cold War, after all) is nothing new, and saying that your opponent can't be trusted to handle National Security goes back to the Civil War at least. Trump is different. Accusing Congress of plotting a coup via impeachment proceedings is saying that the law isn't the law. Imagine the furore the Republican party would have put on if Bill Clinton had said anything even hinting at this during the Lewinsky scandal. But, again, their standards are different when it's one of their own.

If you're talking about the whistleblower contacting the intelligence committee, and then trump alleging that Schiff helped write the complaint- then explain away the existence of the phone call. It's the phone call to Ukraine, not the complaint, that's at issue here.

Except that he *hasn't* made any better trade deals; his understanding of what causes trade deficits is on the level of a 5 year old. Deficits are caused by Americans buying more finished goods from abroad, not by those naughty foreigners refusing to buy American. His solutions to immigration and the like are actually behind the curve since illegal immigration has been going down for years and his "response" has been to tell asylum seekers that they should just go back and be tortured. "Reducing regulations" has been a Republican plank forever, there's nothing new in Trump spouting it. And so Trump came to DC, used his position to appoint his family and close friends to influential positions, used his office to enrich himself because foreign dignitaries (who know which side their bread is buttered on) stay in Trump hotels when they come to visit, cut a deal with Putin to build a Trump hotel in Russia *while campaigning for the White House*, and also did nothing, other than cut taxes on the rich. Would she have preferred I go 6 months and then let her down? Let's do be adult about this. A clean break right now is best, when I can already tell that her personality and mine are not compatible. There is a rich history of religious and literary tradition revolving around the devil character, and almost none of it originates in the Bible. (Lucifer, by the way, was the King of Babylon, not the Devil. Lucifer, or "Light Bringer", "Morning Star", is the Latin name for the planet Venus.)
