I always love how ultra religious people will quote Leviticus and claim that the bible is gods word. using this as a reason to be anti-gay(leviticus 20:13) then forget about Leviticus saying that clams, shrimp and a lot of their favorite seafood is just as damning.
11:10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11:11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
11:12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Has anyone else brought this up to their religious friends?
Art 11:02 thou shall not eat seafood. Especially smoked salmon! (that's more for me)....
All "christians" cherry-pick which parts of the bible they'll follow, or site to justify their agendas.
They've been doing that since the thing was first made-up.
Very true idiot xians have been telling lies and escalating religious violence since Gutenberg and King James 500 years now
@GreenAtheist They were doing it before that. The whole damned religion was founded on lies and misappropriation of other religions and cultures.
@KKGator yes religious violence is the very beginning of religion when shamans taught women to be raped and boys to kill but bibles were never printed nor book bound for many xians until Luther and rebels against the Vatican...
KING James published 1607 and ENGLISH schools were opened to a small but growing middle class.....
@KKGator an xian mob burned the Library @ Alexandria and murdered Hypatia breaking off heads and arms from sculptures 17 centuries ago but zero bibles were read to the mob
@GreenAtheist I am aware. You keep posting this stuff to me like I don't know anything. It's patronizing AF, and it's getting damned annoying.
Please. I am aware of the history of the bible and of christianity.
@GreenAtheist I KNOW!
I think it’s time we stopped allowing them to quote and give credence to anything from this work of fiction. I just shut down all biblical references from anyone by saying “no point in quoting scripture at me because it only makes sense if you actually believe it...I don’t, preferring Grimm’s Fairytales!”
I have quoted back Shakespeare, Dickens, Hitler, Chairman Mao, Bertrand Russell, Joseph Smith and Mr Spock at Christians, usually to delighted cries of "You see, even you cannot do better than the Bible" or some such nonsense.
@LenHazell53 They are basically brainwashed nitwits and it’s pointless to engage with them. Reason seems to just be missing in even otherwise seemingly intelligent people.
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual "uncleanliness" - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there degrees of abomination?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your adoring fan.
James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus, Dept. Of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education, University of Virginia.
PS (It would be a damn shame if we couldn't own a Canadian)
@Aurora62 ou ar more than welcome. It's one of my favorite religious comebacks.
The Bible is a buffet. People go through it, pick what they like and ignore what they don't like. The problem is, not everyone likes or dislikes the same things--which is why there are so many disagreements about what this god expects. My advice--ignore it all . Well, I think that is the advice of just about everyone here .
And,how about wearing clothing with mixed fibers(cotton/poly blend, anyone?)? Or eating pork? Or tattoos? Stone them all?
@linxminx According to Judaism, the origin of the prohibition of the mixing of fibers (or, "shatnez" ) has been lost to time. The conclusion is that there is no discernible logical explanation for it. Such laws in the Torah which defy explanation are known as "chok" ("ch" pron. as in "Bach).
Jews may argue as to the significance of the prohibition, but nonetheless regard it as a known unknown.
No Christians attempt to live by the 613 Mosaic laws. They cherry pick as convenient.
No wonder they dumped the old testament
It's only a matter of time until some christian zealot shoots up a seafood restaurant with an AR15.
zionists are shooting innocent starving Palestinians daily in shrinking apartheid ghettos....religious murderous believers have been stabbing torturing raping burning drowning or shooting ever since.the first shaman invented religion to rape women and brainwash boys into violent cults
love the "hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" reference in your name
Monty 11:03 "Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out!"
The Killer Rabbit is the anti-christ.
I'm allergic to shellfish, but not crustaceans. Octupus, squid, and cuttlefish are in the Mollusca family, so I can't have those, but I wouldn't eat them, as they are smart and really cool .
Well you need to point that out to them. All seafood is now off the menu for them.
And, according to the N.T. also OFF the Menu is anything with a cloven hoof, crawls upon the ground, etc.
I once reminded my Evangelist neighbor of that restriction and his comment was, " Oh but that IS in the Old Testament and it no longer applies since we now a NEW Testament with Jesus."
The look on his face was priceless when I told that what I had said came straight from the New Testament and NOT from the O.T.
He was even more shocked when I opened the Goat-herders Guide to Galaxy to the exact page, chapter and verse and showed it to him.
The Old Testament prohibition on homosexuality was brought into the New Testament in a catch-all verse for various sexual sins:
Acts 15:29 New International Version (NIV)
You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.
Sexual immorality covers a lot of ground and it is a shame that one form of scriptural immorality is focused on and all the rest pretty much ignored.
Sexual immorality would catch nearly everyone out, especially as it seems to be the pleasure element of sex that causes a fit of the vapours.
Even though Christians claim the New Testament supersedes Tanach (known to them as the "Old Testament), they are not loath to use whatever it is within their reach to assert a narrative which reinforces their social and political agenda.
I know of no Christian who pays the least amount of attention to the laws of Halacha; for, to do so would be a negation of their faith that Judaism had been abrogated in favor of their own claims to ultimate truth. Many Evangelicals these days do not even give their children names of Hebrew origin. They want to get as far away from Judaism as possible.
This is why I don't understand the observation that ultra-religious people will take the time to quote the laws of Leviticus to your face. Firstly, Christians are known to eat whatever the hell they want without apology; and, secondly, I have not known religious Jews to get preachy with non-Jews about their beliefs.
I was in a situation in culinary school where a trio of fish was served to a clientele of Jewish customers. The fish included catfish. Nearly the entire party returned thei plates. I've never seen anything like it before or since in my career.
"I'm not eating this catfish! Get me some fish and chips!"
Can you say "hypocrite"? I knew you could.
Hypocritical actions in the church is nothing new.
Leviticus 25:44-46 = SLAVERY ... This was the foundation of the slavery laws in the United States until the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the US Constitution. Oy Veh
Vatican decree of 1450 set up Admiralty "discovery" laws for White xian duty to conquer colonize and exploit savages globally.....
@GreenAtheist ~ Well those Babylonians who conquered Rome, perverted the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and established the Vatican are also doomed by biblical prophesy. Babylon must fall. I enjoy using their own books against them... sorry, do not mean to offend.
@ExculpatoryLover it does offend me when I read how people assume bible fictions are true.....there WAS NO PERSON jesua nasoret.....religion has always been invented impossible stories....the oldest alleged story of a crucifixion failure SURVIVOR is claimed to be written 70 years after Palestinian resistance to Roman rule escalated and about the same time Jerusalem was sacked severely....the xian religion was invented by Constantine 200 years later morphing the Mithra cult popular with his soldiers......Jefferson tried to rescue so called teachings 1500 years later cut ,& pasting with his razor blade out of 2 bibles a skimpy 56 pages out of many hundred....yes xian lies offend me like Santa & Easter bunnies offend me since I was 5 years old
The majority of Christians are ignorant about the Bible, especially fundamentalists. Leviticus translates as the law of the tribe of Levi, and the exhortations within specifically related to the priestly caste, it was not a commandment for everyone.
Moreover, Christianity is based upon the New Testament, not the Old, which is fundamental to Judaism.
Modern Christianity is based upon St Peter's warped interpretation of Jesus's teachings, not what was actually preached by Jesus.
If Christianity is based on the new testament and not the old testament then you have to throw out the ten commandments as well because thats where they are, haven't heard a christian yet that won't take an opportunity to preach about them
@joeandbarb Read the Bible carefully, and there is only one commandment applicable to Christians, the ten commandments are aimed at the tribes of Judah.
