Who else was raised catholic?
Guilty as charged. But, out of 7 of us 6 are now atheists.
I was baptized catholic as an infant. Then later at 10
my mom became a Jehovah’s Witness.
So I’m extra holy I was baptized twice.
My parents tried to make it stick. But it kept falling off.
Catholic family. Catholic school 1st and 2nd grades. One nun shoved a bar of soap in my mouth, twisted it around, then sent me back to my seat without allowing me to rinse my mouth. I remember some group paddlings in the coat room, kids lining up and bending over, with the nun coming down the line and whacking us with a paddle.
Another nun grabbed me by the hair and shook me because I hadn't memorized the Seven Sacraments. Later when I was taking a bath, my mother noticed I had a bald spot. My parents were angry at the nun, complained, and took me out of Catholic school the next year.
I was. Three years at a private catholic high school with the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Bet them priests / Monks were pretty mean!!
My written French is flawless, but I became an atheist anyway!
Mom was Catholic, Dad was not. Went to Catholic School into fourth grade. Had to go to mass until I moved out. Still don't believe.
No, but on occasion I went with friends to their catholic church - opened up a new dating pool. Got invited to join the choir - said no thanks.
I was. Most of my siblings went to Catholic school. We moved to the suburbs when I was young and I went to public school. We HAD to go to church every Sunday. That was non-negotiable. I tuned it out most of the time. It was so full of guilt and shame messages. I never liked it or believed it.
I always felt so down after going to church. And the ridiculous dogma i.e. 'you must marry in the church and have children' ended it for me after many years as a C & E Catholic.
Sounds like myself once.
Catholic school from 3rd through 7th grade, catechism classes on weekends when I was in public school, church every sunday, confirmation... none of which was ever my choice. Once I was 18 and could make my own choices, I was done. Atheism didn't come until much later, but I think since I reached the "age of reason" I was always at least somewhat agnostic.
I was. Went to church for 18 years, Catholic School for 7.
Was baptized as catholic, received holy communion, confirmation, I’m the only one in my family who turned away from it.
Me. So was my late wife who, like me, later became a Unitarian.
Me, catholic grade school with nuns and everything...
I had a nun teacher in 1st, 3rd and 6th grade. They were real meanies. Me and a friend in 3rd grade had to write 200 times “I will not draw inappropriate pictures” after she caught us drawing “ Devils on motorcycles”.
@SeaRay215ex I had nuns 1st and 2nd with principle 3rd and 4th and none 5th and 6th because they were becoming much less common. 1st was the penguin with the wooden ruler and 2nd was a very quiet woman in the more modern habit. ah memories! lol!
I played it for a while. I was an altar boy and everything. Later, I did a reading at mass on Saturday night mass, the "hip" mass. I kinda knew it was horseshit for a long time, but mine was a position of privilege in my nearly-all-ethnic-catholic community. I fixed that when I went full on atheist during my college career, at a Jesuit university no less. Never looked back. My trigger? Having to tell some old dude in a booth how many times a week I jacked off, which if I didn't do that and died, I went to hell automatically. That rankled, because 13 year old boys jack off a lot, and it's really none of the monsignor's business. I never was molested, by the way. I liked the church picnics in the summer for the ethnic food, cheap steamed clams, and loose regulation of alcohol consumption. The rest of it, they could jam up their tight puckered arses. LOL
My father and his father (my gf) were enslaved Catholics. My gf couldn’t afford to keep two girls and a boy (my f) in C schools. Instead of sending all to public schools, he took my f out after 6th grade so he could work and his sisters could stay in C schools.
He married a Methodist who started us in public schools. When the bishops said the highest duty of a C parent is take his kids out of public schools, he obeyed. He worked hard and was able jto keep five kids in C schools. Due to his occasional physical violence, before he died he knew all of us had quit. Due to my mother’s occasional verbal violence, I threw both both parents and religion out of my life. Agnostic for a while, I finished college and had a good life. Retired, a friend kind of challenged me and I chose atheism.
Decades from now, what remains of H. sapiens might criminallize the religious indoctrination of children.
