I stopped by some of my favorite amphibian haunts today, hoping to hear early peepers (temps were in the low 70s today!!). No luck finding adult frogs, but I netted some greenfrog tadpoles. I released them after getting some pics. It won't be long ...

Not much to look at, but always a welcome sight. This little guy is a winter stonefly. Sometimes they show up as early as January, so this year they seem a little late. But they always bring me hope that spring isn't far off!

It's been years since I lived with Boxelder bugs. The two I've found this week didn't recover from the freeze.

A lucky screen grab I caught from '14. One of my favorite images ever. That spider was on one of my milkweeds in a year I was rearing monarchs. I've video of this little wasp dragging it along the windowsill. :D

Vegans never answer when I say what about the trillions of living things killed on the roads on earth every day from the smallest insects to moose. then there are trees and animals killed to grow crops. I see it as too many people taking too much. I ...

My first night setting up the lights in 2018! I'm so excited about what tonight may bring. Probably nothing too exotic: early season moths and parasitic wasps, maybe some hoppers and flies. Now, I just have to be patient until dark...

A new one for my lights last night: a predaceous diving beetle. This one didn't come in until around 3am, so I caught it for some pics this morning. I've frequently found the larvae of this species in shallow ponds and vernal pools, but I've rarely ...

No pic but there is a busy beaver doing a lot of work at night in the river by the hot spring I frequent. Last evening I got to see it surface about 3 times. It is about 2 feet nose to rump

A few of my last A. dubernardi larvae. Most of my other caterpillars have pupated already. These are some of the second hatch, almost fully grown now. These guys are so neat to observe. I just can't get enough of their feeding behaviors.
