This is the Hickory horned devil, the larval form of the regal moth (Citheronia regalis). These are my favorite North American caterpillars.

My dogs checking out a very angry Eastern gartersnake. No dogs or snakes were injured! Before the dogs could get too nosy I moved the snake to the other side of our fence and set it free.
