When I lived in Taos I had a mouse problem for a short time. I would catch them in these little plastic traps that wouldn't hurt them. I would then take them to a field and let them go. I can't kill animals, not even a mouse.
My sister had a bad mouse infestation when she moved in, was given two cats it went away the cats odor scares them away without them being eaten
Our cats have to "earn their keep"....they keep the mice and small snakes from (a) entering the house /
giving me a heart attack. 
Some are paid killers others do it to live or just have fun like humans play tennis.
