@FrayedBear We originally were going to make our basement an apartment and rent it out. We live in a three story house, if you count the basement, which actually has a door above street level. We were using only a part of the upstairs and thought we would get more by making the basement for us and living there renting out the two floors upstairs. So we did. Since I am a cabinet maker and had use of a shop for my own stuff, I made everything that is inside, including the front door and a screen door. The city would not let us do more than 800 sq ft, so there is another 400 in the back that we use for storage. Works out well, but we need a porch deck with a ramp so Kate can get out in a wheel chair. Works out well as we have great renters and I keep forgetting to raise the rent. They greatly appreciate the house as they have always lived in apartments that were way to small. One, the daughter, has Aspergers, the other cares for her.
