Is he your first cat? I've had cats for more than 40 years and I don't even bother trying to stop them doing stuff like that - they just ignore you anyway, safe in the knowledge that sooner or later you'll give up and they'll have won. Accept it: we're just a species of ape they domesticated to carry out tasks that require an opposable thumb for them.

Like the say, you can teach a cat to do something but you can’t teach them to not do something. Well, you can teach them but they just ignore you. My cats are allowed just about anywhere. Places they aren’t allowed into have the doors closed.
