One problem with judging the past is we do so from a modern perspective. We view some things as bad but don't understand the circumstances that have brought about the ills of the past. Yes, slavery is very wrong but it had been a fact of life over millennia but life was hard and people did what they had to. An article on slavery, in the National Geographic, showed that even though the percentages of slavery is down the actual numbers of people living under those conditions is higher then ever (due to the highly expanded global population). I agree, absolutely, we need to look far deeper than what appears on the surface. More of this type reasoned approach is needed.
