I like the sentiment, but as with all socio-political labels, you will never find merely one, clear cut definition. Democratic socialism seems to be an acknowledgment that pure "ideal" socialism cannot exist and function any better than pure capitalism. Both "pure" systems tend to collapse under the weight of their weaknesses.
The key to counterbalancing the abuses of capitalism seems to be to regulate effectively and apply sufficient taxation to provide for the common good in regards to basic services and protections. That doesn't make the system "not capitalist." It just keeps it in check.

I am trying to understand the differences between democratic socialism and social democracy. According to these definitions from Quora, I think I might be more of a Social Democrat than a Democratic Socialist. Till I learn more, I guess I am just a Democrat in limbo.

"The fundamental difference between democratic socialism and contemporary social democracy is their respective political aims. At its core, the ultimate aim of democratic socialists is the realization of a socialist economy and society.

Contemporary “Social democracy”, on the other hand, is defined as a set of social policies and a political ideology that advocates said policies. Unlike democratic socialists, social democrats don’t advocate for a fundamentally different economic system from capitalism: their focus is on regulating the excesses of capitalism to protect workers, consumers and disadvantaged groups. This often goes alongside support for tax-funded and universally-accessible welfare provisions.

Social democrats don’t view capitalism as fundamentally flawed and irrational, let alone question its fundamental elements (production for profit, the wage labor system, private property). In contrast, democratic socialists view capitalism as irrational, inefficient or unjust and hold the view that a superior form of economic organization based on social ownership and democratic management is possible. Therefore they aim to replace capitalism with a socialist economic system."
