He may have been at one point.

He is very selective about what he chooses to report. Whether that means he has many elephants in his office that he cannot see or sees and ignores I do not know.

I am always wary of "holier than thows"!

My concern is not if he is a dirt bag or a hero.
It doesn't seem likely he could do much to assist in stealing information other than to encourage the act.
To me, the concern is how far the strong arm of the U.S. will go to persecute those who blow the whistle on foul play.

@MojoDave The question unanswered is how could anyone help another steal "secrets" that their employment authorised them to access. Manning was an intelligence contractor with full security clearance to the material.
