I don't really want to hear about my next door neighbor's anything. Well, they do have pets. They can talk to me if I can pet their dogs and/or cats.

Exactly. 
My brain starts melting and I drift into my own ideas. Have to work really hard on staying with their topic. Which as an adult I know I should do but there was this lovely rainbow and a butterfly went past and I want to follow it and see what it is doing...

Oh, I understand 100%. I have ADHD and my mind wanders a lot. Especially if someone else talks louder than whoever I'm talking to. It happened last night. We were out to eat with my MIL and some guy behind me suddenly and loudly said, "and that's why I..." and all my mind focused on was him. Totally missed whatever my husband and MIL were saying. 
@Kynlei Mine is more a case of, "What you are saying is so boring and dull that I have no interest in it what so ever and while I know I am meant to be interested in your life I am not but that butterfly might be interesting." So while I know I should be polite and listen I really have to work at it.
