Are you an "Innie" or an Outie"?  Can you let your extrovert out when necessary?

How to Embrace Introversion While Extending Yourself

Here’s an analogy: think of a yo-yo. When it isn’t being used, the string is coiled cozily within itself. When it’s time to play, the string unwinds, and the yo-yo extends outward. Fun!

Here’s the key, though: to maintain momentum, the string must frequently return into the yo-yo. As long as the rhythm of extending and returning is maintained, the yo-yo can be played with indefinitely.

Introverts are very much like yo-yos. We are comfortable when we are coiled within ourselves. But we are also perfectly capable of extending ourselves when it’s time to play or work with others. The key is to return to our inward selves when we begin to lose momentum. As you practice extending yourself in social situations, you will find your own rhythm—it’s different for everyone!

Excellent analogy. The other day I was at the gym enjoying a good work out. Once the crowd started coming in I quickly recoiled!

I'm an innie. My former occupation exposed me to throngs of people. I dislike crowds and public events. I am able to handle most social situations because they have an ending and I can return to my "Fortress of Solitude" and the life I built within it.

I seem to be like a chameleon... If I'm around someone more introverted than me, I become more outgoing. You know... to help the conversation along.

When I'm around someone that is more of an extrovert, I try to go with the flow... (but more in a "responding mode".)

I think that's a pretty natural response... to mirror people to a certain extent... within your limits, of course.
