I find that being both an introvert and a non-theist makes for many awkward moments of silence when with religious family at gatherings. It pulls politics, religion, and things that have become political/religious issues that really shouldn't be off the table. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what topics aside from boring pointless small talk tend to work well for you?

Books, movies, world events, and your favorite interest or pasttime.

Since Nov. 2016, I have tried to avoid political conversations with family. I see them only infrequently, so it isn't too difficult, because we can always talk about what is going on with ourselves and other family members. Maybe because it is mostly female relatives that I spend time with? Maybe that makes it easier. If it were more mixed company, it might be harder.

I’m in vet school, so I can pretty easily rely on that. I’d say try work or school, especially if your in a similar field as the person

Fortunately, the very religious in my family aren't over-the-top, so I don't get confronted with that, and I avoid non-family occasions that are religious in nature. Some topics I'll fall back on are gardening, food and new eateries, and we usually play games which don't require in-depth conversation. I tend to try and fill conversational voids but decided it's not my job to do that, so I'm attempting to train myself that silence isn't necessarily awkward.
