I love garden to kitchen stuff.....
The cherries are great...
How about some cobbler....
Looks great. Unfortunately, here the birds get most of the cherries so I substitute Rhubarb. Also, during the season, I stock up on cranberries and freeze them (they freeze really well) and use them mostly for this dish. Still have 1 package left.
we have to chase the starlings out of the tree every year but we are in their migration path so if you can save it the first attack by being out in the yard they move on. The local birds do not do so much damage.
@HerbertNewsam I have a solar Eagle for my grapes and that seems to work. Also, if one had pie cherries the birds don't seem to care for those.
@JackPedigo please do tell that to the starlings that slaughter my montmorency cherry. It is a tart cherry. They really like them.
@HerbertNewsam That's really strange. Birds tend to leave the tart cherries alone here. Sounds like you need netting. The best one is a tight knitted white one. Our neighbor has these and simply throws them over her trees and the birds can't get to the fruit.
@JackPedigo i sit right outside nearby them and sic dog Lizzy after them. Birds don't like sharing to well, oh well.
And the great advantage of all that hoe work is your ability to metabolize some cobbler with little weight gain.
I've cut down both my cherry trees. They just don't do well in this climate, neither the Bing nor the Stella. But just a week ago we took our first drive of any length of the last three months when we drove down to Andy's Orchard in Morgan Hill. There we got a couple pounds of an heirloom cherry known as Tartarian, a couple pounds of the best nectarines I've ever eaten and 4 pounds of peaches with which I made a fresh glazed pie for my brother's first visit since February. My activity in the garden does me some good as does my time on the exercise bike and the Pilates workouts we've been doing online. But I have no hope of keeping up with the calorie intake from our visit yesterday. In addition to the tacos and pie I made, my brother brought a batch of my mother's Hello Dolly cookies (ground graham crackers, butter, coconut, walnuts, semi sweet chocolate and sweetened condensed milk.
There is nothing that compares with tree ripened peaches/nectarines or plums. These fruits from the grocery store have obviously been picked too early and can be almost tasteless compared to fruit allowed to ripen on the tree.
The Tartarian is that similar to the montmorency cherrys?
@HerbertNewsam Don't know that one. But it is dark, not overly sweet but with a depth of flavor.
@MarkWD the montmorency cherries are a tart cherry with a touch of sweetness. Very good in baked deserts.
@HerbertNewsam Those sound good. While I like eating a Bing or Ranier I always preferred the Stella's tartness even for non-cooked snacking.
@MarkWD the problem with my stella is getting them fully ripe. they will get pretty dark similar like a bing when full. We like them at the bright red stage best. But the local birds love them too..lol
Do you all like recipes...
This is this one.
Short cakes.
I grease and flour the pan but probably doesn't need it here. 4 cups flour,
My flour mix is a 10 grain flour mix using 4 cups unbleached flour, 2 cups whole wheat flour, 2 cups Bobs red mill 10 grain cereal blended down to a fine consistency. I mix this together then:
Measure 4 cups out for the large baking pan size 9 x 13.
1/2 cup sugar and a 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
2.5 Tablespoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup veg shortening or butter, cold
1 cup cold milk, or 1/2 & 1/2, or buttermilk.
Cut in all dry ingredients into the shortening add milk a little at a time mixing with a fork till all is mixed. Don't over mix it should be soft and not stiff but slightly workable dough.
Spread the fruit mixture evenly then spoon out the dough in pieces
If want to sugar for sprinkling on top or a glaze or plain.
That looks wonderful. I make a blueberry one that looks like that.
We were just putting the bird netting around our blueberries today. They are getting close to turning....
So yup one of those too....
