Theories on a thistle far from home.

Why is there a thistle growing on the side of my driveway that is native to Mexico & Texas? I am in Wisconsin. American Star Thistle is very popular with the pollinators, is non invasive, lovely both in scent & appearance so it may stay. An annual I am told. Must have come in on a tire but who has been here from all points west in 5 years? Not my tires. [pics.davesgarden.com]

Your snowbirds escape to the southwest every winter and bring them back with them on their vehicles, campers, and motor homes.

The seeds are a component of some songbird feeds, so bird poop could be the culprit.

My first thought is climate change, but that's the easy answer, even though armidillos have moved well north of their traditional range and have been spotted as far as east as North Carolina. I wonder if conditions in your area have been warmer than usual allowing this plant to take root and thrive.

I did a little research because I thought I have seen the scientific name offered in a couple of the plant catalogues I receive. Turns out, this plant is native to your state. Granted, Wisconsin is the only state that far north it is native to, but it is there.

@RussRAB Must be a fairly recent acquisition here. Recent as in the last 30 years ?
