It has been an exceptional year for blossom with us so far, especially the common Hawthorne of the field and hedgerow. It starts snow white, but then fades to off white before becoming pink as it dies.
Yet they are soft muted shades, like old white linen, once embroidered with pink roses which has faded for more than a century.
