So pretty, I used to have a 26' long deck box and grew a wide variety all together, mixing the sededs from 6 or more packets, soooo delicious and so lovely in color, texture & shape.
And then when they bolted from the heat, replace with marigolds.
Start new seeds and have a 2nd crop!
@FrostyJim it was along the back of the pool deck & south-facing and so got waaay too hot after mid-June...I used to sow outdoors there on St. Paddy's Day and have gorgeous lettuce, albeit the tiny thinnings, less than a month later
It was about 4' off the ground, which made it faster to warm up but then get too hot from the accumulated heat of the wood and the pool water nearby. Plus we have Brutal humidity July/Aug.
Lettuce is a very interesting plant...so picky!
I had such beautiful lettuce and harvested all of it 10 days ago as it was getting too hot. I grew romaine, butter crunch, and red and green leaf lettuce.
Yours looks so delish!!
Why not start some new seeds indoors in a cool place then transplant them for a late summer-fall crop?
@FrostyJim. Well, it is still incredibly hot here until the end of October and into November, so even late summer would be too hot for lettuce.
I planned on starting some lettuce from seed in mid October right in the raised bed. That way I'll have winter lettuce.
Today I am making my first pesto of the season with the fresh basil growing on my deck.
