Three years ago when the drought and hard freezes destroyed my pomegranate trees, I decided to let a few of the volunteers that had sprouted make it. this is the first year for fruit on 3 of them, This cultivar starts out red, turns green, then get red again when it is ripe. I decide to leave my basil out in a box all summer and it has done well.

This particular cultivar is about 85 % true from seed, so I figured the odds were in my favor. The old trees produced between 100-150 lbs of fruit a year. Can you say pomegranate wine?

@JenBeberstein I used to really baby the trees, and will probably do that to the ones in my back yard.
@glennlab pomegranate is my absolute favorite fruit but I have never had pomegranate wine.
@JenBeberstein When you have 450 lbs at one time, you find innovative ways to use it. It takes about 7 gallons of seeds for 5 gallons of wine. It is more like a rose' than anything else. I make it with a high alcohol (18-20%) content, so it is slightly dry and packs a punch.

@glennlab @$2 per pomegranite at the local market that is a reasonable return per tree. My "Granny" like supplier brought a dozen and they sold in ten minutes. Last year I bought several peach trees from her. They have just started to leaf bud after their winter dormancy which means I need to quickly find a spot for them in the ground if I'm not going to leave them potted another year. The mother plant that they came from provided me with the most beautifully flavoured peaches that I have ever tasted. I wrote about them in "Food Glorious Food" enjoying them with fried pork.
