My Nerine bulbs just flowered ... South African natives, related to spider lilies and share being in the Amaryllid family. The first two pics is of a varietal which has ultra thin, grass-like leaves, and the second is of Nerine Bowdenii which is available in the nursery trade and has straplike leaves and a larger, deeper pink flower. Notice the structure of the flowers, with the recurved petals. The delicate, soft pink ones are still the bulbs I smuggled out in my suitcase, in rolled-up socks in 1994 when I visited my Mom in South Africa
Wow! They're different and sure make a statement. Smuggling them out of the country took bravery. I wouldn't have the guts to do that today.
See what gardening does to people? It gives the confidence to bring home a vision.
Those are a vision of beauty and the colour would work well with the calming nature of our backyard gardens. I don't think they would work well with our garden zone though. Thanks for sharing!
@dede18
They look awesome and I love the colour. Rare and unusual plants and shrubs make me curious.
I enjoy your garden with the special flowers you share. Thank you!
How do they overwinter?
