The first of the seasons 'forced' rhubarb came ready today. If you have never done it, it is very easy. You just put a large bin or tub over a root to keep it warm and dark, then you get tender stems which are very sweet and a lovely pink colour a good four weeks earlier than usual. With some sponge cake, vanilla and cream, it will make a great sweet for tonights dinner.

This will be the second year for my rhubarb plants, I am hoping to have a good crop!

Next year they should be big enough to force some. Only do about a third each year if you do, they need time to recover.

My ex had an oxylate kidney stone so when someone stole my rhubarb plant I didn't plant another. Another opportunity to celebrate my new life--I'll plant several of them this time. I used to make pie filling & can it. Can't wait to try blanching it--never even heard of it before!

Rhubarb is one of my best plants. I even found a natural spray composed mostly of garlic. This keeps the deer away for weeks (believe it or not they actually dine on the leaves).

JackPedigo Level 9 Mar 10, 2019

Must try that.

@Fernapple It is called "Liquid Fence - Deer & Rabbit repellent."

@JackPedigo Wonder if it would work on goats & chickens?

@Carin Give it a try. I don't know how well chickens smell. I think goats are smart enough to not eat Rhubarb leaves. A friend has 5 gats and he asked me t bring any fir branches for them to eat so I did. They took one sniff and walked away. Apparently they don't like cedar.

I love early rhubarb. What a treat. When I was in mid-Wales we had a huge garden with far too much rhubarb so some of it we just allowed to do its own thing, and we loved the flowers, too.

Mmmm love rhubarb I’ve always grown up with it growing in the garden, just needs a bit of custard and it’s ready to go

True, I have gone a bit over the top and made a cold trifle to share with my friend tonight.

@Fernapple that’s a good idea not had one of them for a bit

Interesting...how did you keep the surrounding soil bare? And what part of the world is this growing?

Robecology Level 9 Mar 10, 2019

Its growing in the UK, and the soil is kept bare mainly by mutching with compost. ( It likes plenty of rich feed and a moist spot.)

I love rhubarb I've tried growing it . I think it's just too hot in eastern N Carolina
