Does anyone recognize this plant? It is coming up in our garden. It seems invasive and has a reddish/orange root. I was hoping it was something nice like goldenrod/salidago? I am in MA.

Looks like the leaves are arranged oppositely? That is in pairs? With that & the root, MAYBE Vinca major but seems like it would be denser....unless it was mowed earlier or something. Once it blooms ID will be easier. Definitely does not look like Goldenrod.

@Suki, can you take a piece to your local nursery/ Maybe they will have a clue. Or they county extension agency.

If you take it in, I would suggest the piece like the first picture, many weeds look alike on the surface but the crap under the ground is what tells you for sure what you are dealing with.

Remember a "Weed" is just a plant you don't want there.

If you want it there you can wait for it to bloom (if it does) and enjoy it.

Nothing wrong with that. My visiting birds sow a lot of things that way.

And I can't ID it.... If you get stuck I'll ask my nephew though.

I really do need to ID it....

@SukiSue I'm asking. Probably tomorrow sometime.

My nephew is slow to respond but he does know his plants. lol

Also, many so-called weeds are Herbs

@SukiSue Ok he asked if there is a lot of it? (If there is he suggested you pull it).

I'll ferry back now that you were hoping for Goldenrod or some such.... 😉 He FB's I do this... lol

I have to agree with @freeofgod, root spreading weeds are some of the most difficult to rid yourself of. Early eradication and repeated maintenance will slow them down, but seldom eradicate it. They store energy in their roots and will go dormant if they are repeatedly eradicated on the surface, but you have to remain vigilant for their return.

No. Looks like a common weed we have that spreads from the roots and gets a tiny blue flower between the blades when it matures. Don't know the name but I would suggest spraying a mix of vinegar and water on it if you don't want it there.

Looks like it's going to be some kind of spreading shrub. I'm sorry I don't have a clue.*
