One that I have yet to try. Has anyone else tried eating succulents? If so which?
I've eaten a fair bit of purslane, which grows rampantly and spreads wildly in my area. The leaves on the wild stuff are smaller than on the cultured varieties and blooms are also MUCH less attractive so growing it for ground cover or food is why I cultivate it. Leaves & stems are good in salads, soups and mixed food like casseroles. I haven't tried eating the seeds, mostly because they are SO tiny that collecting them is a much greater task than I am willing to undertake.
I am a big fan of aloe vera juice, but not from my garden. I buy it by the gallon from Trader Joe's.
I have a vague memory that it is poisonous if not treated to remove the poison.
How about drinking succulents? Tequila and Mescal come to mind.
A man with his taste buds dedicated to alcohol?
@FrayedBear Not really but Mescal went from being a joke to actually really liking it (in spite of the worm).
@JackPedigo I agree "drink for the taste and quenching affect only".
I have eaten some succulents, but their lack of taste or very bitter taste normally doesn't lead to continued use. Yucca roots, prickley pear, prickly pear fruit, It is an aquired taste.
Ornamental yucca are quite common round here but I have not heard of them being eaten. Do you have any recipes?
@FrayedBear none that I can reccommend, it is a cuban dish with the consitancy and slime of okra, with a much blander taste.
@glennlab Allamanda was saying she likes prickly pear fried with chilli & garlic but that it has a similar habit of turning yuck if over cooked.
