A nice idea with some 'instructions' at least for parts of N America. [treehugger.com]
Hedgerows are great and they've been around thousands of years. They are ubiquitous in England. Here's an interesting Rick Steves view of one such hedgerow.
While looking into this I saw a holy crap aerial shot of what the allies had to face when invading Normandy. It was said even tanks couldn't get through some of these hedgerows. [abmceducation.org]
I wish we had more here.
While this looks great at first glance , some potential problems include Home Owners Associations (HOA) , which require more formal arrangements , poison ivy , which invites itself into areas which grow wild , vines with thorns which tear at your own skin , and while some berries are great for humans , some of the wild ones , are poison to humans .
Good points - I had some poison ivy try to sneak into my shrubbery a couple of years ago. Coming from a state that loves its 6-8' fences, I like the idea of a softer border. I have a row of 7' variegated pittosporum shrubs and I love looking at them more than fences, as do all the little creatures who nest under them.
