I'm wildly enthusing over my veg patch, hope not too boring! Today managed to put up a shade tunnel about 6'x25', using only what I had on the property. I will have to buy more shade cloth for the mid summer, but still.
I now have 3 rows planted, plus 2 more bean trellises, a new row of cacao trees, a corner of dragon fruit, and we should be eating the 3 week old arugula and basil next week. 20 kinds of seed are in the ground, mostly veg and herbs. I'm going to make a separate area for cherry tomatoes and aubergines as my daughter is allergic to the leaves on both.
Adding some nicer pictures I took this am. Note: pomegranate fruit and flower, the kapok pods fully exploded, giant red Heliconia, male papaya flowering, the tiny avocados have formed, 5/8" long or more already, my grandson learning names of trees, 19th C Danish cottage, Giant Cavendish bananas.
Nice. Home gardening is a great thing to do for oneself. Awesome.
We too are getting ready...
Boring? Lol, we all understand. It is not boring when you are nurturing garden life. I just spent 2 and a half hours today transplanting hundreds of tiny basil seedlings. I don't even know what I will do with so many, but there it is, lol. What we are willing to do for love! (of gardening)
@OwlInASack How cool do your nights get? Basil really doesn't care for cool temps. Even where I live, to be on the safe side it is best to wait til May to plant them out.
@OwlInASack we live in Fahrenheit world here, so I have to consult conversion tables, lol, but I recently read the sweet basil I have started doesn't like it below 13 or 14 C. I thought we were beyond that here, but we just had a surprise coldfront a few nights ago, and it dipped to 10.
You must have felt very satisfied having accomplished that.
What are the hoops made from?
G'day. Long time no x paths. The hoops look like the 1" plastic conduit. Not sure if they are UV proof though.
@FrayedBear I used 1" PVC electrical conduit for my greenhouse. Supposed to be UV stable??
I'd love to garden in the tropics, but I bet the fantastic growth also applies to the weeds.
@Allamanda nor is the adjacent jungle!
@Allamanda or is that part of your garden also?
Yeah that even pretty bad here is the Gulf South....humid and hot. Weed paradise! But hey! I will take it over my brother's Arizona gardening challenges any day!
@MikeInBatonRouge I've gardened on the gulf coast and visited the tropics, I was amazed at what grew an how fast it grew.
@glennlab yeah, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest's rather English climate. Been down here on the Gulf Coast over 30 years, though(yeesh!). Had to learn to garden all over again, but it is worth it.
