Hello fellow gardeners, I promised my youngest son he could help in the garden this year. I have recently purchased some herb seeds, as well as a red bell pepper start and some tiny onion chives, which I'm not sure if that is a different kind of chives or what, but anyhow, I was hoping some of u lovely folks might have some suggestions 4 a few other things that will grow well in pots. I didn't do any berries yet cuz the neighborhood kids eat them all before I get any, but now I feel bad 4 them so I will probably go back and at least get some strawberries. thanks a bunch
Fennell, Dill and Parsley will do well in large pots and as a side benefit, they attract Black Swallowtails
one of the herbs I got was dill!
@Byrd @leafhead. I checked the range of the Eastern swallowtail before I sent my above reply. Unfortunately, it looks like the black swallowtail is not present in Washington state. However, there may be others that are present that use herbs as host plants.
Byrd,
Leafhead and I are members of a group called "Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators." Monarchs are native to every state. We would love to have you join our group. Most of the other members have never raised monarchs, and are learning the process.
@PappyOnWings I wanna say I joined already, but I have a terrible memory so I should probably double check
@PappyOnWings
I think the Anise Swallowtail visits your range and eats Fennell and Dill
If your pots are deep enough, carrots. Also leaf lettuce, bush beans-they can be planted about 5" apart. A cherry tomato if you have a tall pole to tie it to. What veggies does he like? Almost anything can be grown in a pot if there is enough room for a good root system.
I have medium sized pots 4 now. about a foot deep at most. we aren't allowed 2 plant anything that spreads or takes over, like mint or squash. well I could probably sneak some mint in if I kept it in a pot, but the apartment manager would notice a big old squash vine, I will b getting some tomato starts soon tho
Besides my brown thumbs killing things off the summer drought totally destroyed a dozen healthy strawberry plant that had survived winter frosts and were starting to fruit. The snails, bird's and mice got the fruit before I did!
So dear @Byrd I can't help you. The only thing that I seem to have thrive are the rooty ends of spring onions bought for salads, they are now nearly three feet tall, the leaves more than an inch broad and nearly a tenth of an inch thick. They are touth as old boiled boots but, finely slivered and pulverised then cooked in the pressure cooker, they produce a good onion stock. The fairly big (golf ball sized) white bulbs are excellent for salads, frying and raw in meat sandwiches. Silver beet and kale once established also seem to withstand my clumsy nurturing! ?
I like perennials . This year , I put in asparagus . Have to keep breaking off the spears this year , but once it's established , it will provide vegetables every summer . It's a relatively expensive vegetable , so if you like it , it;s a good mini investment .
I had no idea they were perennials, and they do good in pots... score! I love asparagus, thank you
@Byrd A back field of Dad's property had them growing from a previous owner . They do best if you break/cut them off regularly . I planted some this year . They sprouted , I broke them off . More sprouts popped up . They are very fine at this point , with a feathery top , but will get thicker , if I continue to snap them off . Probibly won't get to edible size this year ,
