Who's bright idea was it to not tax churches (or religious institutions) in the first place?

It was a compromise By then senator LBJ, If churches would stay out of politics they would enjoy preferencial tax treatment. It was a move to stall the civil rights movement by conservative, they wanted to just keep churches out of politics he wanted a way for the black churches to serve as community organizing points.

@glennlab Hmm. I won't claim i understand, the US system, but since religion is now hand-in-hand with politics, shouldn't they now be taxed??

@scurry They try to bring it up every couple of years, it will have to be included in a major tax reform bill that has lots of things that people are fighting over to allow it to sneak through
