In the 1970s. For those of us programming in COBOL on a computer the size of a yacht residing in a room the size of Cowboy Stadium and using 16 large refrigeration machines to keep it cool while it processed data which it stored on tape, I believe there were about 30 Tape machines the size of a refrigerator; this was a welcome report to contemplate.

I started in the computer field in the early 80s, on DEC Vax systems, still using large tape drives and disk drives the size of washing machines in a special-built room, so I know what you mean.
