Strange but true, the German army in WW2 tried a Krummlauf (lit. 'bent barrel' ) attachment for their StG-44 assault rifle to fire around corners at a 30 degree angle. It had a periscope attachment for aiming.
The barrels wore out in no time, and the stresses involved meant the bullets usually shattered, coming out with an unintended shotgun effect. Very few were made. It was also tried as a tank crew gun to cover the blind spot against infantry with nasty hand grenades (or nasty infantry with hand grenades?), and the USSR experimented with these same type of barrels for their PPSH-41 SMGs after the war.
What, too much information?
No, that was interesting. Thanks for sharing.
