This is an interesting facial reconstruction of an ancient woman from Gibraltar.

Do you really think she was that white? Hunter gatherers were out in the sun all day! White scientists don't recognize their racist bias and how their work perpetuates the illusion of whiteness being the standard.

@Donotbelieve Not "could have been" but would have been! Take a look at Roman/Etruscan paintings of the Etruscans, one of the older civilized groups in Europe. Their sedentary, indoor aristocracy are depicted as quite dark with curly hair. The light-skinned Indo-Europeans came later. As with pictures of a white Jesus, this reinforces the illusion of whiteness as the default color of humanity and whiteness as the color of progress.

I love this:
"So when you see her try and push your mind back all those years ago when the Rock was very, very different, still our Rock, still our Gibraltar, still lived, played and suffered and had their day to day life in a different way but they were humans just like us with the same emotions."

Definitely beautiful.

Interesting in that she was 30-40 years old. It seems the average age of people in that period was about how old she was so she must have been an old woman yet the reconstruction seems to portray a youthful looking person.

It is generally thought that the average age includes a lot of infant deaths, most people who survived childhood probably lived to only a little short of the age they reach today, and they would only have aged a little faster than we do. Certainly that was true of most of the stone age cultures which survived to modern times. Many women would have died prematurely due to the dangers of childbirth.

@Fernapple I have heard that and there is some truth to that. However, life was very hard on people in those days and this does tend to age one.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a listing of the average after one has reached, say, puberty.

@JackPedigo You can find those sorts of averages, but they need a lot of careful searching.
