Never qualified

I am SO glad to see intellectual work on this subject!
I appear as the expectation of caucasian, but have a strong genetic predisposition to my grandfathers "Bulgarian". Given the late 19th century population in Bulgaria, there were two distinct inhabitants: fair-skinned north european migrants, and dark-skinned east/arab migrants, or Romany/Gypsy. My grandfather was the latter, taken on by my father. When I was young and tanned, which happened easily, I was often taken for some native blend and developed a sense of identity with that. Fast-forward to current ancestral investigation, and voila! I have begun marking survey questions now as "mixed race".
