Biden Wins!

Congrats to the Democrats for electing Biden and Harris! It's been a rocky and emotional four years but change is in the air. It's time to reflect and look to the future. How are you feeling?

Relieved that Trump is going, but sad that liberals will undoubtedly repeat their behavior during the Obama years of going to sleep about America's wars in the Middle East, accepting talk over action on climate change, and not caring about the class war of the 1% against the rest of us. Biden and the liberals in the Dem camp will support a better response to Covid and more Covid relief, as well as the BLM movement, but that will be it. Anything outside of their own self interest, like not getting sick or hurt by Covid, or the rights of colored people to not be murdered by police, neither of are against their own personal comfort or wealth, will be supported by Biden or his supporters. So the economic inequality will continue unabated. No M4all, no student debt relief, no paid sick leave, no reduction of corporate rule. I am disgusted that in four years the white working class will again feel angry, frustrated, and betrayed enough by Biden/Harris that they will elect a Repub even worse than Trump out of desperation to try something other than the usual neoliberal corporatist Dem lies.

And, of course, after that happens, the DNC and establishment Dems will blame progressives and the left for their defeat, unless by then they can still get anyone to believe it was also the Russians...

I disagree with some of what you said Tom, but we need to do away with bipartisan hatred and both major parties need to be restructured. That is a start and if not done this will all happen again.

@DenoPenno I fucking promise it will happen again in four years if the Dems nominate another corrupt corporate neoliberal again then, and yes, Harris qualifies as that, unless by then we have a viable third party that can nominate a well known progressive and get into the general election debates. Right now, I have way more faith in a third party prez candidate getting us out of this than in the Dem party dropping its corporate donors and nominating a progressive. And for those who say a third party could never win, this time around a third of eligible voters sat this election out, about 70 million voters. So if a progressive third party candidate could get those voters excited and hopeful, get into the prez debates, and then pull in even ten million votes away from the Dem candidate, you've got a win the same way Slick Willie did in 1992.

@Diagoras I don't know if I will be alive to see it, but even now the younger people are immune to the whole tactic of red-baiting of progressives by calling them socialist or whatever. While some young people are still easily suckered by appeals to identity politics of steering them to vote based on the candidate's gender, race, etc., just like other voter groups, the young people that do vote based on policy rather than candidate identity do not care about labels like socialist, etc. Those young people judge the candidate on whether they share their values and policy positions, not on what labels the corporate media or party leaders give the policy or the candidate who promotes the policy. In this respect, they are savvier than their elders, who are still easily swayed by party leaders and the corporate media as well as labels.

So, even tho I am very disgusted and pessimistic about the future, in this area I am strangely hopeful. These young people were born long after the Soviet Union fell apart and to them the labels communist or socialist seem like ancient myths or legends that are irrelevant to them or even phony lies. They also don't trust the corporate media or establishment elders of either party.

Ranked choice voting is like campaign finance reform that would actually solve the money in politics problem. Both major parties know that public financing of all federal campaigns could be easily done and solve the problem, but they will never really support it because it would break the duopoly's stranglehold on the system and allow third parties to win. Same with ranked choice voting. Neither will happen until third parties have enough power to force it, but without either one they probably never will get that power at the fed level of government.

@Diagoras They are willing to turn out and vote, but only if two conditions are met by the candidate. One, that the candidate credibly supports programs and policies that clearly benefit young people, as well as others, and that those would directly impact the lives of young people, like min. wage, college debt, etc. Second, that the candidate does not speak in generalities and platitudes, like Biden for example, but offers concrete ideas for what they are going to do, because young people are justifiably cynical about politicians and corporate media. They have seen and heard it all before, so they will not turn out and vote if they think the candidate is saying the usual BS or does not offer their demo any specific improvements. Older people continue to vote out of habit, even if they don't believe it will change anything. Younger people are more interested in other things and will only vote if it's convincingly proven to them that it will matter for their demo group.

We need to bring an end to neoliberalism. It’s the same bird that’s controlled this country for 50 years, regardless of party.

@Canndue You got that right. That is the disease, as well as racism. Trump was just the latest symptom. Too bad most Americans are too dense and brainwashed from the corporate media to see that.

@TomMcGiverin WWW.HOWIEHAWKINS.US was forced off ballots illegally in 19 states and QUARANTINED since March ....Bernie & Tulsi were sheepdogs to lure away progressives and Mayor Pete was 100% CIA militarist

I feel I can breathe again. And I need to add: People, let's not forget the mid-terms this time or voting in your local elections. Also lets hold the government to the fire in making changes so something like this NEVER happens again. Just think, if trump had a fully functioning brain and not at the emotional level of an eight year old ... The trump reign should be seen as a wake-up call to everybody who values democracy and freedom. And this could happen to any party - remember when the supremacists were Democrats or Dixiecrats? I do.

A projection is not a win. It is a media WAG. (Wild Ass Guess)

A statistical analysis is not a wild guess.

@LovinLarge It can be when analyzed on the basis of skewed data. The foundation here is rubble.

@Silver1wun The data in question are the votes. The votes are not skewed. Sounds like another unfounded Trumper fraud claim. You're grasping at nonexistent straws.

@LovinLarge Though I voted for Trump and regret if he loses, I don't hate anyone on the Left and can easily deal with a legitimate victory. The nation has weathered much worse.

For the Left, on the contrary, when and if Trump prevails, they are neither emotionally nor mentally equipped for his victory, should the courts correct the unconstitutional changes making this mess possible.

Now that they celebrate a media projection as a legal victory, a fall will be much further and even more bitter. There will be violence and bloodshed and that will be nothing for any of us to celebrate.

@Silver1wun Use as many words as you want, a projection is not a wild guess. I don't know why you cons make such easily refuted statements.

The were exceptionally conservative in their assessment....

You clearly do not understand the difference between a projection and a guess. And anyway, it's now a fact.

@LovinLarge I'm not a con but do see a lot of humor in premature celebration. If today is cold and the forecast is for warm weather in three days, one doesn't celebrate immediately by going out in shirtsleeves today. Y'all remind me of Christians celebrating a 'rapture' in ascension gowns since day before yesterday.. Okay if you want to pleasure yourselves before the date but if it stands you up, the disappointment will be much deeper.

@Silver1wun Let's see your evidence of any relationship between electoral projection and meteorology.

@LovinLarge You haven't the cells to spare for it. This will be an exciting week regardless of outcome. Stay tuned. 👀

@Silver1wun Brain cells don't expire when you use them, Einstein, you should try it.

Bah, bah, bleat the stupid sheeple who think Biden will be some great improvement on Trump by fighting class warfare on their behalf, reducing deportations, fighting climate change, eliminating student debt, raising the minimum wage, adding paid sick leave, passing Med4ALL, etc. As John Lennon sang, "And you think you're so clever, and classeless and free, But you're all fucking peasants as far as I can see". So today they celebrate and enjoy the illusion that Biden will even try to make things that greatly better than they are now. That might be true for response to Covid and not opposing BLM, but if you think he wants to make anything better than they were under Obama, you are deluded.....

Identity politics is such bullshit and the nutritional equivalent of eating only empty calories, fills you up and leaves you malnourished. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that it doesn't matter if the candidate is a trisexual, green-skinned Buddist Martian-human hybrid. What matters is what policies they support, whether they have integrity over constantly selling out or always compromising before they even begin to fight for a policy, and, finally, if their record matches what they say they will do if elected. Anyone who bases their vote instead of on these things and votes on the candidate's identity is a fool and a rube that the major parties will continue to play like a piano. My prediction in four years is that if the Dem leaders don't think they can push her to the finish line like they did Biden for a squeaker win, they will nominate a gay Hispanic male, so they can then play all the remaining identity politics cards that are remaining. We almost already saw that with Mayor Pete, so you can't say I'm overly cynical to predict this.

Ahhh, the “you’re all sheep and I’m woke” person. You’re not that special.

@FreethoughtKaty You can think what you like, but I am far more aware than most and most Americans are sheeple. The evidence of the latter is abundant. You don't know me at all and you'll never meet me, so leave it at that. I was reading the newspaper at age 10 and understood all of it. At grade 8 I was reading books at the college level. I am a hell of a lot more informed, intelligent, and aware than most Americans. Believe me or not.

@TomMcGiverin “I am far more aware than most and most Americans are sheeple”. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha You are not special. Also, the Earth is not flat, the pandemic is real, and we did land on the moon.

@FreethoughtKaty I am not denying any of the three facts you cited at the end of your comment, but, since you continue to insult me about making the claim that I am more informed, smarter, and more aware than most Americans, I am blocking you. I am simply being honest and justifiably proud about my superiority in certain areas. But since you are being an ass, I will block you, as would most people in my position with you.

I can see that you are very satisfied at how you have turned out, but has it never occurred to you that that is true of most people? Even a monster can think that it's a "stable genius". You are probably not as special as you think you are, and you are evidently not so smart as to have learnt not to crow about your brilliance. Genuinely smart people don't go around reminding others of how superior they are, just as honest people don't feel the need to constantly tell you they are not lying.

@Gareth well said

@TomMcGiverin I also blocked her without arguing with her ....your comments are 100% true

Well, imo, Biden may NOT be the most 'perfect' of choices, BUT anything has to be better than the Orange Crested Buffoon.
Also, imo, for the U.S. to TRULY rise out the absolute shit-hole it HAS been now for decades IT needs to start earnestly search for younger, more progressive Men AND Women as representatives OF the People and FOR the People and FROM the People NOT the 'chosen' few who have fortunes already made and secure.
The TRUE meaning of DEMOCRACY IS "The Government OF the People, BY the People and FOR the People" NOT "The Government of the Many, BY the Few and FOR the FEW."
Also, imo, FOR the U.S. to really become a PART of the World and Universe at large it needs to learn and enact a few lessons such as the following,

  1. America IS NOT the be all, end of all of everything, IT IS just another small cog in HUGE machine called Planet Earth and Human kind,
  2. IT IS NOT the Knight in the Shining Armour of Democracy that it see itself to be, it is, in fact, a canker, a blight infecting those who do NOT want be Americanized,
  3. and very IMPORTANT, Clean up your OWN backyard first and foremost BEFORE you try telling everyone how great you are (which btw you ARE not),
  4. Humility is far, far better than Hubris, try it for a change you WILL like it more than Hubris, trust me,
I could list much, much more but I HOPE you get the drift.

I’m a socialist dem. so Biden was nearly my last pick in the primaries, but he is decent and he is ousting Trump, and that’s going to have to suffice for now.

5

I'm not getting too excited. Moscow Mitch has already said he will continue to make sure American democracy will not function by blocking Biden's cabinet appointments. The republican traitors will not rest until the US cannot function.

Maybe--OR, recognizing the immense results Biden won and what that might say to Mitch's political future, he might decide to play the part of a patriot. That's all we really need.

Relieved! And thrilled to see history being made. I am a mom of all daughters, with one granddaughter here, one on the way and the possibility of a third in the spring. In my lifetime I've seen so many changes for the good for women. My dad would not let me go to college in 1976, he would have had to sign the paperwork and he said no way in hell. He did sign my enlistment papers though. I clearly remember when women could finally get credit cards in their own name or sign mortgages. (My aunt never married, she had a house built in 1963, her dad had to be her cosigner. She had a decent job, she was 35 years old, and she still had to have her dad's signature.) I remember the first woman to go to a military academy. I remember the first women general and flag officers, and the first women astronauts. Then to once again have an educated president who can speak in coherent full sentences, and cares for people. No, Joe was not my first pick, but he is 100% better than Donnie Dumpsterfire. Well, anyone would have been better than Donnie Boy. To be 100% honest, I've never liked Donnie. I remember reading about him for years and years before he really became famous, and I've always thought he was a huge waste of oxygen. It hasn't gotten better with time. I think the next few weeks will be "interesting," but knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel makes it more bearable.

HC..."We've come a long way, Baby!" 🙂

@LucyLoohoo We sure have! And we have a long way to go, too. Keep your sneakers handy, we have miles to go and lots of asses to kick!

@HippieChick58 I intend to drop dead of VERY old age at a march for reproductive rights! In fact--I'm sure there'll be one in January! Remember the first one, four years ago? Remember how energizing that was? We'll be there again, I assume? 🙂

@LucyLoohoo I attended our local Women's March with two of my daughters, and we were there for the third daughter who could not attend. And we were there for the daughter she was carrying which was why she could not attend. If there is another local march and the weather is not crappy we will be there.

@HippieChick58 I took two ''newbies'' with me for the last one. They said "We didn't know why we were doing it but now...now, we understand." The feeling of solidarity with 300,000 other people is indescribable!

Fact is we are still divided and will do Monday morning quarterbacking for a while and then the SC will hear some cases that may just wrap up the legacy of trump and the gop. Meanwhile thousands of Americans are getting infected with a virus that for many if it don't kill ya can leave you fucked up for a long time. A healthy person is more likely to think better and make better decisions this is what the corporate wealthy fear the most.

The US simply MUST accept personal responsibility for its own health....wearing masks, staying ''socially distant'' and being conscious of risks.

@LucyLoohoo Personal responsibility is a Repub buzzword and is not enough to fight a pandemic. We need leadership and laws that enforce mask orders and social distancing in public indoor settings. Repubs don't allow personal responsibility for women when it comes to abortion, among other things. So why let them get away with falling back on that when public health is at stake? If they want to risk illness and death for themselves, fine, but if they want to put others at risk, they deserve legal penalties. They do seem to understand and support that in plenty of other areas. Fucking hypocrites...

@LucyLoohoo It must definitely be the responsibility of ALL Citizens to wear a mask. Nobody in South Africa goes anywhere without a mask. All public places provide hand sanitisers, trolley sanitisers etc
...but no-one is allowed anywhere without a mask (worn properly).

I am delighted to see Biden win for the sake of the American people but how will it effect the UK ?.
Boris and Trump had a bit of a bromance going on and there is no doubt that Biden favours the EU over the UK.
The so called "special relationship" will probably continue as one sided as ever.
The much heralded great trade deal between the UK and the USA may materialise but again it will favour the USA.
As regards the USA's foreign policy it will probably go on as ever with their divine right to rule the world.
I don't think Trump did too much damage internationally and at least he tried to reduce US troop numbers abroad.
It will be interesting to see what happens in Palestine. Idiot son in law Kushner's great plan is of course a non starter and hopefully Biden will have a more realistic view of the situation.

Moravian Level 8 Nov 8, 2020

Boris has already played the politician and congratulated Joe! The UK tried to work with the pustule...which is an impossible task.

Only weak men are intimidated by powerful women.

@LovinLarge I have a confession to make: it has never occurred to me to be intimidated by powerful women (but I guess you already guessed that about me).

@LovinLarge You might benefit from a better understanding of the language. Look up the definitions of "nauseate" and "intimidate".
Then again, perhaps you won't.

@PBuck0145 @anglophone Only weak men feel the need to order women around.

@LovinLarge Also perhaps look up the definitions of "suggest" and "order".

@PBuck0145 Perhaps in your case, IMPOTENT is more accurate than weak.

@LovinLarge The type of man you prefer. Thanks, I'll decline.

@PBuck0145 Yep, was pretty sure you'd have a firm grasp on that word.

It’s going to be a change for worse if it happens especially if the radical democrats manage to capture the senate. Trump has done more good in 4 years than Obama did in 8!

Trajan61 Level 8 Nov 8, 2020

Really? And can you tell us exactly how you've come to that conclusion?

What exactly did he do to preserve endangered species?
What did he do to protect endangered landscapes?
How did he enact legislation to protect the planet from climate change?
How did he work to protect our partnerships with other nations?
What did he do to ensure health care for Americans?
What did he do to stop the COVID endemic?
What did he do to protect children seized at the border?
What did he do to protect the middle class?

Obviously, there are more questions...but I figure you can begin with these,.,....

Fuck white supremacy.

3

Better than in a long, long time! If Biden can win the cooperation of the Senate (despite the fact that it's in the nation's best interest, they might also feel self-interest for the next election) we can achieve a lot! Frankly, I wept during the speeches last night--seeing a daughter of immigrants speak so lovingly of her mixed-race background, saying..."I may be the first...but I won't be the last!"

I believe we can look forward to a government which values principles, empathy and faith in one another. I believe we can restore some confidence in the government, hopefully not just within the Democratic party but also in the GOP, which claims to be patriotic.

I'm excited about the idea of a First Lady who values education (!) because our educational system is abysmal now. We need to teach civics, history and government and we need to build on public schools, to be sure we have an educated electorate in future. We must focus on lower/middle-class education...not just private schools.

The middle class is a bridge which spans both upper and lower groups and it needs reinforcement, not subtle scuttling!

Biden is also a promoter of American Imperialism and corporate capitalism. Progressives have to be prepared to resist him.

Krish55 Level 8 Nov 8, 2020

He has already been receptive to progressive influence and we will have to work hard to see that this continues.

I agree and I will be watching and critiquing him from the beginning, but most liberals, not progressives like me, will just go back to sleep while Biden/Harris are in power. Esp. the white suburban liberals, they are the worst. They have nothing at stake to lose with what Biden is likely to do.

Oh FFS. Do we have to resist everything? Can’t we try to support someone whose goal is to rebuild this ravaged country from the rubble?

@Apunzelle Tom answered your White Privilege above...

@Krish55 No idea whatsoever what that means?

Hopefully he is malleable, not sure gopher ever had an original thought...

Did we just elect a candidate for President who publicly said, "We have put together the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in US history"? I keep thinking the video is a fake edit, but it appears it is not. What did Joe Biden ACTUALLY intend to say if it was not a freudian slip? This level of mispeaking is deeply concerning, and goes beyond a simple verbal misstep. Is it real?

Sore loser.

[usatoday.com]

[reuters.com]

[factcheck.org]

@LovinLarge I misread what you first wrote. I don't like what is said here, Biden's words. There is something else I was watching and I just don't like some of this stuff. I did not hear the remark in context and that's why I asked.

@LovinLarge So I watched that part of the interview, Biden is being interviewed by two ppl who worked under Pres. Obama, and yet neither one of them point out the error he has just made to correct the record. That seems irresponsible.

I would think a voter fraud organization would be an organization whose aim was to combat voter fraud. It’s like if a person said they were going to a cancer hospital. No one thinks the purpose of that hospital is to give people cancer - that’s just shorthand for cancer treatment facility. This is no freudian slip or misspeaking of any kind - it’s just how normal people talk.

There are plenty of substantive issues with Biden’s record to be concerned about, but this is just fabricated nonsense based on an isolated clip taken entirely out of context.

@Flowerwall You impugn your own credibility by taking the statement out of context. The entire interview was about voter protection.

Until you can produce evidence of voter fraud, it's disingenuous to allude to it.

@skado So what voter fraud prevention organization is he referring to? Your comparison isn't really valid. There are no such things as hospitals that give cancer, whereas there ARE attempts at organized voter fraud.

The article above says voter PROTECTION organization. Maybe. I still think the interviewers weren't fully tuned in to let that stand, and I guess their name is Crooked Media, so, then they are probably just fine with jumbled, misspeak and unclear meanings. They must specialize in it.

@LovinLarge So I impugned my character, supposedly, and what did you do? You stated an untruth. "The entire interview was about voter protection." No it wasn't.

@Flowerwall
I don’t know. And if you’re asking the question, you don’t either. Why not find out before getting upset?

@Flowerwall Yes it was, it said so in the articles. By your own admission, you only watched the part of the interview in question.

Like I said the other day, you are disturbed.

@LovinLarge I skipped through the entire interview and it was NOT the only topic discussed. This particular wording by future Pres. "We have put together the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in US history" - yes after hearing this, now I feel disturbed. Any rational human being should feel not good upon hearing that. What other types of verbal errors should we expect during the upcoming years?

@Flowerwall It was the theme and purpose of the interview and the quote was taken out of context. Trump lost and like him, you are not a gracious loser but a loser nonetheless.

@skado "Why not find out before getting upset?" Those words he said are disturbing, I can't NOT get upset after hearing that said. And I am trying to find out. That's why I'm here bringing it up.

@LovinLarge "a loser nonetheless." And what do you call your childish name calling, winning? Get real. Touchy liberal that is very prone to immature responses, quite typical.

@Flowerwall Facts do not constitute name-calling.

@Flowerwall
It took me all of about eight seconds to google the quote to learn the context. If you want to be able to stay in outrage mode, better not do that.

He clearly meant organisation to deal with electoral fraud, but if you're incapable of seeing that then you have my deepest sympathy.

@skado Glad to hear you're so fast. Good job. Still don't quite get your point, but I think you are trying to tell me what I should have done in the first place. You shouldn't try to control like that, otherwise the same logic can be used with every query you ask of others.

@Gareth Considering everything that this country has been through I think we all need deepest sympathy, hopefully yours, what you just expressed, is not just disguised sarcasm.

@LovinLarge You know what you were saying.

@Flowerwall Agreed, I always know what I'm saying. You should try it.

@LovinLarge We should all be exactly like you. Feel better?

MIXED FEELINGS. Since I am a National Socialist, I have to take the good with the bad. Trump is a very good Nationalist but not good at the Socialist part. But at my age 54 healthcare is becoming very important to me. So, Biden was best for ME! Trump screwed himself by saying very very little about pre-existing conditions, etc etc. if he had come up with something substantial in the cost and security of healthcare, he may have won!

What? You're a Nazi? Wow!

@Gareth
National Socialism was a political system. It was a great political system! It had Germany rocking when the world was in a depression. An intelligent person can see that the racism thing was a SEPERATE DEBATE! Of course I’m not for killing off a race .
I used to try to clean it up and call it TRIBAL SOCIALISM - which anthropology speaking that’s what it was

@SocialDarwin On the contrary; an intelligent person can see that the "racism thing" was an integral part of the National Socialist mechanism and world view of Aryan Germans as a superior bloodline. Even if the anti-semitism and murderous racial superiority themes weren't damning enough, you would still be okay with the rigged courts, political thuggery and murder, indoctrination, euthanasia, war-mongering, absence of free speech, a free press and elections because, what, inflation was curbed and some motorways were built? Do not confuse socialism with authoritarian nativism.

@Gareth
I don’t feel a particular race is superior. I just think nationalism (which trump said he is) is superior to wasting resources on other countries. But I did not vote for Trump because he will allow the top 1% to keep gaining a divide bigger and bigger.

Humans are tribal. You can’t deny that.

@SocialDarwin I think it's fair to say we are tribal - but only to our detriment. With nuclear proliferation. pollution and climate change affecting or even imperiling us all I don't think we can afford the tribal mindset much longer. I see myself as European rather than British and I don't think any nation can really exist without co-operation and compromise with others. I think we all know that Trump just wraps himself in the flag for self-serving purposes. I mean - all his merch is made in China for example!
