there is no low down on dm. we can observe the effects on baryonic matter, but don't know what dm is.

You're writing a paper on the topic of 'dark matter' and you appeal to a blog called 'agnostic.com?' Seriously? With all due respect, asking for the 'low down on dark matter' here would appear to represent, well, let's just say, a 'shot in the dark?' 😉

In the universe approx 5% matter as we know it. Approx 27% dark matter. Approx 68% dark energy. Depends on who you ask.

It was hypothesized when observing galaxies in the 1970. Observations of spinning galaxies determined that the stars at the edge of the disk were turning around the core at the same rotational speed as stars closer to the center which is counter-intuitive. We would expect that the stars at the edge would take longer to turn around the center than the ones closer to the center (kinda like the planets of our solar system).
Round galaxies seem to turn like a record: A star on the edge takes (about) the same time to rotate around the center as the ones close to the center which is demonstrated on a vinyl record by painting a dot on the edge and hear the center. For a galaxy to turn like a record, it requires much more mass (hence gravity) then what is accounted for by calculating the mass of the stars (visible). The missing mass (making the missing gravity) was coined dark matter as in unknown, unseen matter.
