I can only assume the clergymen concerned were either bored or inebriated and were in a hurry to get to the wake afterward.

OMG, that's hilarious! As a kid listening to music on the radio, I remember wondering what those crazy lyrics were all about, only to find out years later I had them totally screwed up!
