I've been away from the site for months, so Christmastime seemed perfect for coming back.

When I ran an atheist group I'd always promote solstice stuff, saying how we heretics still enjoyed feasting and shopping. But privately, I always waited for Christmas and Hanukkah, and their commercial madness, to go away. I didn't care about consuming and empathized for anyone working retail then. Now that I'm back on Agnostic.com, what pops up, a GROUP for retail!

Many years ago I worked at Radio Shack. I have no stories that can improve on this three-year-old "Eulogy for RadioShack, the Panicked and Half-Dead Retail Empire":

Every four weeks I work a few hours in my food cooperative. Every member must work there because labor is valuable. With so many of us working, we don't have to hire much staff, which keeps prices low, though that also forces high involvement. Sometimes I stock shelves/do early-morning receiving, but I'm social, so I like working checkout. This photo of me is eight years old but my tasks there aren't much different from today.

I really enjoyed reading those anecdotes. Have you considered posting them in the Authors, Editors, Publishers and Readers group?

A LOT of retail stores are going under . A lot of folks are into home shopping . the food cooperative is a great idea .

In the UK I have noticed many high streets with empty premises. The ratio of coffee/tea shops to retail shops is changing sharply. But as fewer and fewer retail shops remain, there will be less reason to visit any town's high street, and so coffee/tea shops will also decline.
It's all a matter of trying to compete with virtual shops, which have no rents and rates to cover and often don't even pay sales taxes at the same rate.

Posted by AmiSueBy the skin of my teeth... My store is trashed. I was cussed at, yelled at, and disrespected in all manner of ways. We made the goddamn sales plan :)
