At my job, they offered me to become a team manager and I refused. Way too much trouble for not much of a rise. Of course, one down side of not getting promoted is that someone else will, some one that might be annoying to you. And recently my girlfriend was having a real hard time at her job, getting often criticized by her bosses, having that constant impression to be clinging to her job only by the skin of her teeth. They offered her a demotion that comes with a 20% salary cut but that also allowed her to keep her seniority and her social benefits. She accepted it. She's feeling quite relieved now.
