A recent NPR report on dating apps was very informative.

Ohferpetessake, all the internet does is widen the pool....do you fall in love with eveybody you meet in person? Or are they a mixed bag...... Do you not get to know them and beware of red flags like them asking about money? ( not even asking for it, merely mentioning it!!!!) Is it safer to meet ...

Hi Anne it's me again (for the 3rd time). I lost my connection at the last shutdown of the site. I added some pictures from my first two times. I've given this issue a lot of thought and the word 'chemistry' keeps popping up. Everyone says they want to get to know the other first but then want to meet asap to see if there's chemistry. My first marriage was totally, 100% chemistry and it was a mess so I know how that works. One would think from divorcees one would have learned their lesson. With bars its about chemistry + alcohol ad bad mix but still people do it. So far I've not had anyone asking for money but do meet a lot of liars. It's hard enough being my age and living on an island but to then deal with ghoster's, obfuscaters and an increasing greedy organization is too much. I have met women with whom I feel attracted. Often I get to know some of these women better and every time I've asked myself what the hell was I thinking! With my late partner the chemistry was not there but the knowledge was and that made all the difference.

@pamagain It was funny at the time but we learned a lot from this couple. Of course during the pandemic the event was not held and last year the area was flooded out.

@Julie808 Thank you for this. A new PBS show "Maryland" ( I have no idea where that name came from was a scenario where an elderly woman living in London traveled to the Isle of Man and created a new double life for herself. It was about two fighting sisters being brought back together. I liked it. I wonder could someone like you imagine living on Kauai, living on an island like the Isle of Man? https://youtu.be/UWxlZtq645E I have a book that calls into question all our misconceptions about relationships. It's titled, "Sex at Dawn-how we mate, Why we stray, and What it means for modern Relationships" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7640261-sex-at-dawn. It really made me think.

I always ask my wedding couples how they met. A good 20-25% of them met online. I'm not sure if they paid for the dating apps, but there are free ones. My couples are generally above average in intelligence, atheist or agnostic, and more tech savvy than most people, so that might account for the ...

I wonder how the free ones work. The report stated some of the smaller ones have been consumed by match and free services are being brought into the paid scenario. I have noticed some services match once offered for free are now being charged. Unfortunately, this is the direction many services and manufacturers (like Boeing) are headed for and we all have seen the results. Remember the musical 'Caberate'? https://youtu.be/PIAXG_QcQNU

@pamagain It was for many but the newsletter reassured everyone this was common with her. It didn't seem to slow her down. They're an interesting couple. He's tall and bald and she's shorter and a bit heavier. She often has purple hair. She seems the more fun of the two but his humor is different. When we visited he asked if we wanted to ride his sofa. It was a long sofa with a tiller in the middle and a fireplace structure hiding the motor. We rode it around the neighborhood. He than said we probably were wondering what this was about (we were) and he said they are big burning man fans and they take this sofa in their huge RV to the event and offer rides to others. It had lights so they could give rides even at night.

@Julie808 Wow, I can't imagine doing for a ceremony for a male with multiple wives. I'm going to post a recent item by NPR on dating apps. It's just another example of what happens when bean counters take over an industry. At our age most do not want to marry unless it's for a valid reason (like a benefit - which I have). Too often, if a couple is married and one needs to go to an assisted living facility the spouse is on the hook for the bills which can be huge.

@pamagain I believe in constant learning and discovering this was something new and something I got to experience. When I met the couple I was talking to the woman at the diner event. She asked where I was living and I mentioned the San Juan Islands. She then said they look down on us and then started mumbling and became incoherent. Her husband then said to call 911 as she was having a minor stroke (she was on a med but forgot to take it). Later, in the newsletter it was said she was fine after taking her med and then I asked for them to contact me, which they did. We visited them and the husband was a retired Canadian Airline pilot and had a large house on a bluff looking south (to our island archipelago - they did look down on us). This couple was also a huge fan of Burning Man and went every year. Most of the residences had duel citizenship's.

@pamagain I still remember his speech and how many talked about how funny he was. My problem it's hard to make new friends when one lives on an island. One couple I did meet in Madison live in an odd place known as Point Roberts. It's a pene enclave https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Roberts,_Washington I see them at every convention and have visited them in their home (an interesting situation where one has to go through the Canadian border, drive a while and then return through a separate US border.

@Julie808 Thanks Julie. Interesting as it seems there's a ceremony for everything. My first divorce was also contentious and she had moved to Bakersfield Ca. We have not seen nor heard form each other since. My 2nd relationship was long term but not married and the breakup was fairly easy but, again no word since. My last was finally perfect but the grim reaper intervened (but in a gentle, caring way). It's funny but a NPR report on dating sites showed there are lots of problems. I wonder if there is a non-wedding ceremony that just symbolizes a commitment based on trust and love?

I have come up with a better word than SCOTUS and it is SCROTUS (supreme court republicans of the US). At least this separates the conservative/religious wackos from the saner (all women) from the court. A son-in-law in med school once told us while he was doing internship in El Paso that we wouldn't believe the number of pregnant women who would sneak over the border to have their kids in the US. This gave them a 'special' privileged to helping them eventually gain citizenship - so they thought. Hi pamagain. It's me jack, for the third %^#* time. I got caught up in the last time the site went offline and had to start over again. You thinking of attending the FFRF conference in Denver this Fall?

So you know I am back (for the 3rd time, arg). Of course the 'freedom party is not about freedom for the masses but the select few with money. In the days of extreme climate change, pandemics and species loss the Republican party has lost all standing. Their only hope of survival is through corruption and ass kissing for the rich and powerful.
