My dogs checking out a very angry Eastern gartersnake. No dogs or snakes were injured! Before the dogs could get too nosy I moved the snake to the other side of our fence and set it free.

This is the Hickory horned devil, the larval form of the regal moth (Citheronia regalis). These are my favorite North American caterpillars.

It's a bittersweet night, road-cruising migrating amphibians. Unfortunately, LOTS of casualties. But those that I have been able to help across the road have all been big, beautiful, females. Pics when I get home. So far, spotted salamanders, ...

This is "Bela", a common Chilean rose tarantula (G. rosea). A gift from my son's mother, more than making up for a well-earned rep as a notoriously bad gift-giver. Not sure how old she was when she came to live with us in 1994; my best guess is one ...

I was bird-watching in one of my favorite swamps today when I came across 15 of these beauties: Eastern painted turtles. It was only 40°F today, but these guys were taking advantage of the sun.

I'm so glad that I found this group! I have had a love for critters since I was little. Where I grew up in Pa I was always catching snakes and salamanders. Now I'm living on Oahu and having fun catching things that I didn't have the chance to back ...

My favorite visitor to my night lights, so far tonight: the giant water bug. These are our largest North American Hemipterans and can deliver a painful puncture if handled carelessly. Nevertheless, they're nothing to be afraid of and they're super ...

Strangest critter discovery... This is from several years ago- a brutal mystery. This is a vole's head, upper teeth defiantly latched into a crawlspace vent that evidently looked like an escape route; but the screen inside prevented passage. So, the ...
