Just spent a very UNleisurely afternoon getting a wild squirrel out of my house. I shut up both cats and opened an easy escape route to the outside from where I knew the squirrel to be. The little thing would not leave! I nudged it with a ruler to ...

I just arrived home in Pennsylvania after a month in the Everglades. I was fortunate to see a lot of very interesting critters, though saddened that so many were invasive. Here are some of the more common invasives I encountered during my trip. ...

Today I moved some old rotted short logs that stood on end, and found many of these enormous grubs, about the size of thumb. I suspect them to be some stage in the life of the large death's head (delta-shape) moths we get here but I don't really ...

I'll probably be posting quite a bit, as I discover new critters everyday! I found this Antheraea polyphemus (polyphemus moth) in sad shape. I don't know much about their lifespan, but it seemed to be nearing the end of it. Still, it's beautiful!

We've had such a dry summer that I haven't seen many timber rattlesnakes. This yearling is the only one I found in a boulder field where I normally find many.

These Scathophaga stercoraria (yellow or golden dung flies) were attracted by some fragrant poorly composted chicken manure one day (many years ago, now) as I turned my compost heap. Scathophaga translates roughly as dung-eater. It turns out that...

These are the gorgeous caterpillars of a rather plain brown moth called the Turbulent Phosphila. They live naturally in Pennsylvania and they feed on a thorny vine called Greenbrier.
